What sits behind the siding

House wrap. A sheet that sheds liquid water but lets vapour out, lapped like shingles from the bottom up and taped at seams. Siding is not waterproof; the wrap is the layer that keeps wind-driven rain off the sheathing.Flashing. Pieces and tapes that turn water out at windows, doors, roof-to-wall joints and the deck ledger. Most rot found behind siding starts where flashing was missing or lapped the wrong way.Insulated siding. Vinyl panels with a rigid foam backer fixed to them. The backer stiffens the panel so it lies flatter and adds some insulation over the studs. Separate foam board under ordinary siding is another way to do it.
