Vinyl siding in Chesapeake

Vinyl is the siding many homeowners call about. Whether you need a few panels matched or a whole house re-sided, call to reach an independent contractor who works with it.

Profiles and how vinyl is hung

Vinyl siding comes in several profiles: traditional clapboard (a plain lap), Dutch lap (a scooped cove along the top of each board, which casts a deeper shadow), beaded, board-and-batten verticals and shingle-style panels for gables.

Vinyl expands and contracts with heat more than wood or fiber cement. It is hung, not fastened tight: nails go in the center of the slots with a little play, and panels leave room at corners and trim so they can move. Panels nailed too tightly ripple on hot afternoons; panels nailed too loosely are the first to go in a wind.

Thicker panels and insulated vinyl (with a foam backer) are stiffer and lie flatter on uneven walls.

Things to settle with the contractor

  • Profile and exposure, and whether it matches the neighboring walls or houses
  • Panel thickness and whether an insulated backer is worth it on your walls
  • Color: darker vinyl is more sensitive to heat, so ask about the maker's rules for it
  • Trim, corner posts, J-channel and soffit in the same system
  • What happens to the old siding and to any rot found under it

Questions

Vinyl siding: common questions

Why does vinyl siding ripple?

Usually because it was nailed too tightly or cut too close to trim, so it cannot move as it heats. It can also follow a wavy wall underneath.

Can vinyl be painted?

Some makers allow it with specific paints and color limits. Ask the contractor and check the maker's guidance before choosing paint over new panels.
